2nd Alveston Beavers 2006-7
WOW – What an experience it has been taking over the 2nd Alveston Beaver Colony from Rachel! Firstly we must mention what a fantastic job she did single-handed; thank you for setting us off in such good stead! We have had a busy year; we have increased the colony size to sixteen and implemented some exciting changes due to us being a duo! Joining 2nd Alveston Scout Group has been a positive move, and has involved an incredibly steep learning curve for us both!
We have been joining in celebrating the Scouting Centenary, and attended the Fun Day along with 7000 other Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers at Royal Victoria Park in Bath, and we are pleased to brag again that our Beavers came 1st in the Sally Lunn Bun Wacky Races, winning a Famous ‘Sally Lunn Bun’ each, certificates and a trophy!
We have themed our sessions to ensure they are both fun and educational. So far our sessions have covered as examples, the environment, faith, scouting skills, safety and meeting new people. Our highlights have included a visit from Bristol Zoo, with spiders, stick insects and cockroaches; the boys were so brave! A visit to the Fire Station in Thornbury, and a ride on the engine - lights and sirens included! Making S’mores (melted marshmallows, chocolate and biscuits) Mmmmm! and raising over £190 for Red Nose Day with a sponsored silence; probably our best session yet!!! The remainder of this year we have more scouting skills planned and hopefully a fossil hunt!
We would like to express our sincere thanks to Becky Cook and Becky Jarvis, our Young Leaders from the Endeavour Explorer Unit for all their hard work, help and dedication. They are leaving us in July to go off to university. May we mention we have vacancies available - interview dates to be confirmed!!! We can safely say that without these girls our job would have been much more challenging, and many of the activities we have been able to deliver would have been severely restricted or even impossible to run. We would also like to thank the parents of all our Beavers who have continued to endorse our efforts, and whose practical support is equally vital in allowing us to deliver the varied programme we have offered thus far.
Lastly, but by no means least we would like to thank all our fellow leaders and the unsung heroes of Scouting, the executive committee for all their help, support and encouragement over the last year! We are particularly grateful to the committee for having sufficient faith in our leadership to kindly agree to our request for extra funds to buy essential equipment for the boys. Whilst we are very excited at the prospect of a mini spending spree you can rest assured we will make considered and wise investments for the long-term future of Beaver Scouting in Alveston.
